The most common question in cooking is: How many Ounces in a Cup? Unfortunately, the answer to this question is not as simple as you think.
Also, there are three types of measurement in ounces.
- US Fluid Ounces
- UK Fluid Ounces
- Rest Countries Fluid Ounces
Firstly, it looks confusing. Right? Especially when you are using a UK recipe and based in the US, or reverse. But, don’t worry I will break your confusion. So, let’s jump to the conversion.
How many Ounces in a Cup?
Liquid measuring cups define this question’s answer.
1) As per US Recipe
1 US customary cup = 8 US fluid ounces
1 US customary cup = 8.327 UK fluid ounces
Note: 1 US cup = 236.59 mL
It means 1 US cup of liquid is equal to 8 US fluid ounces. Similarly, 1 US cup is equal to 8.327 UK fluid ounces.
In other words, it only works for US recipes. In short, when you are following US recipe in the UK, then you have to count 8.327 fluid ounces.
Although in UK recipes it measures like below.
2) As per UK Recipe
1 UK imperial cup = 10 UK fluid ounces
1 UK imperial cup = 9.607 US fluid ounces
Note: 1 UK cup = 284.13 mL
3) Rest Countries
1 international cup = 8.454 US fluid oz
1 international cup = 8.799 UK fluid oz
Note: 1 international cup = 250 mL
So, if you are following recipes from other countries then you can take an international cup as a reference. Also, you can see the measurement is different for the US, UK, and other regions.
Conversion Table (Cups to Oz)
I have added two different tables. One is for standard US customary cup and the second is for UK imperial cup.
|Cups||Fluid Ounces (US)||Fluid Ounces (UK)|
|Cups||Ounces (UK)||Ounces (US)|
As a result, you can see it is not that easy to understand as you think. But in the majority case, all the people follow US measurement. Because there is a small difference between US and UK ounces(Just 0.327). And this difference is ignorable.
I hope you will get your answer now. Please share it to your friends.
