Hello friends, in this article we will talk about How to Calculate GPA? Also, we will discuss on grade point average formula with an example.
How to Calculate GPA?
First of all, the GPA(Grade Point Average) definition is:
The GPA is equal to the sum of credit hours weight(w) into grades(g).
So, the GPA calculation formula will be:
GPA = w1 x g1 + w2 x g2 + w3 x g3 + … + wn x gn
Now, the question is how to find credit hours weight(w)?
wi = ci / (c1 + c2 + c3 + … + cn)
The above formula shows how to find (w) value. In other words, the credit hours weight is equal to the credit hour of a single class divide by the total credit hours.
GPA Table
This table will be very helpful when you do the GPA calculation. It helps to find a GPA from letter grade.
Letter Grade | Grade(%) | GPA |
---|---|---|
A | 94-100 | 4.00 |
A- | 90-93 | 3.67 |
B+ | 87-89 | 3.33 |
B | 84-86 | 3.00 |
B- | 80-83 | 2.67 |
C+ | 77-79 | 2.33 |
C | 74-76 | 2.00 |
C- | 70-73 | 1.67 |
D+ | 67-69 | 1.33 |
D | 64-66 | 1.00 |
D- | 60-63 | 0.67 |
F | 0-65 | 0 |
Now let’s take one example and you will get all the things clear.
GPA Calculation Example:
3 credits class with B grade.
2 credits class with an A grade.
1 credit class with a D grade.
So, Total Credits = 3 + 2 + 1 = 6
w1 = 3/4 = 0.75
w2 = 2/4 = 0.5
w3 = 1/4 = 0.25
Now, in this step, you will need the letter grade to the GPA conversion table.
g1 = 3 (B Grade GPA)
g2 = 4 (A Grade GPA)
g3 = 1 (D Grade GPA)
GPA =
w1 x g1 + w2 x g2 + w3 x g3
0.75 x 3 + 0.5 x 4 + 0.25 x 1
2.25 + 2 + 0.25
4.5
Above all processes shows How to calculate GPA? I am sure you have understood the concept. Also, you can use the College GPA Calculator to make this calculation easy and fast.
